This week's verse (
week 10 of the 52 Passage Challenge for those following along) is such a beautiful one. I love the different ways that the Psalmist describes God's words: perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true. What effect does God's Word have in my life? It revives my soul, makes me wise, rejoices my heart, and enlightens my eyes. God's Word also endures forever and is righteous altogether. What an amazing verse to think about this week!
"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." - Psalm 19:7-9
Notes from John MacArthur
These verses contain six titles about the Scripture. As the law of the Lord, it is God's standard for man's conduct. As the testimony of the Lord, Scripture is God's self-disclosure that describes who He is. As the statues of the Lord, it is the binding and authoritative mandate God gives us. As the fear of the Lord, it is a manual on appropriately fearing and worshiping God. And as the judgments of the Lord, the Scripture provides the verdicts of God Himself.
These verses also tell us that Scripture is perfect and totally transforms the inner person. It is sure and reliable and makes the simple wise. It is right, meaning a right path as opposed to a wrong path, and brings joy to the heart. It is pure or translucent and makes things clear; even the dark things become understandable. It is clean - without flaw or blemish - and is not subject to cultural interpretation because it is everlasting. And it is true, absolutely righteous. What an amazing Book!
